Designed by architect Miguel Nogueira Junior, this edifice was constructed at the beginning of 20th century under the Belle Epoque influence. In 1925 it was purchased by Alves dos Reis, leader of the largest money counterfeiting scheme in Portugal’s history. In 1958, following interior renovation, the building became the headquarters of Banco do Fomento Nacional. With eclectic features and 6 floors, the architecture presents a voluntary interruption in the façade’s rhythm and volumes with a monumental architecture displaying numerous Neo-baroque and Art Nouveau shapes and details. An example of the 18th century exuberance that persisted into the early 20th century, it exhibits the complex balance between a classic composition with a more modern language.
