Located in Largo Nacional das Belas Artes, a large square in the Chiado quarter, with a 6.000 m2 area and a façade over 50 meters long, this edifice dates back to the 12th century, when, in 1147, a church was built. This church was completely destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The plot was later purchased by João Iglésias, who trusted the project of the present palace to the architect Giuseppe Cinnatti in 1869. The building displays plastered painted and symmetric façades as well as classic decorative elements. This palace results from a balance between traditional Portuguese architecture and Cinnatti’s European influence.
